Oakdale, Minn. (Nov. 11, 1996) -- Support for LS-120 diskette technology continued to widen today as OR Technology (Campbell, Calif.) announced plans to market a slim-line LS-120 drive during the first half of 1997. LS-120 technology was co-developed by Imation Corp. (NYSE: IMN), the information and imaging company recently spun-off by 3M. Imation manufactures and markets the 3M-brand LS-120 Diskette. Perfectly suited for notebook computers at a height of 12.7 mm, the slim-line a:drive (model FD-2120A) will be available from OR Technology's worldwide network of authorized distributors, including Ingram Micro. "LS-120 technology is tailor-made for notebook computing," said Ray Meifert, director, Imation PC Markets Segment. "With OR Technology's slim-line a:drive, the LS-120 platform offers the only bootable, high-capacity diskette solution capable of replacing the 1.44 MB floppy drive in notebook floppy drive bays -- plus the added advantages of a low power requirement, a wide operating temperature range, and the ease-of-use that has made diskette technology so popular. "The availability of LS-120 drives for notebooks is also a key to establishing LS-120 as the standard in removable storage," added Meifert. "The market in notebook computers is growing rapidly, and customers will be able to enjoy the benefits of LS-120 technology wherever they're computing -- with notebooks or desktop computers." LS-120 technology enables users to store 120 MB on a single diskette -- more than 80 times the capacity of today's 1.44 MB diskette. Moreover, LS-120 drives are fully read/write backward compatible to the 1.44 MB diskette, meaning that users will not render their existing diskette libraries obsolete as they upgrade to LS-120 technology. LS-120 technology was developed by Imation Corp., OR Technology, Matsushita-Kotobuki Electronics Industries, Ltd. (MKE), Compaq Computer Corporation. Other companies that manufacture products based on the LS-120 platform, or have announced plans to do so, include Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Hitachi-Maxell, Ltd. OR Technology sells, designs and manufactures data storage products using proprietary laser servo technology.
